City of Birmingham Parks and Recreation Master Plan 2024-2028

We are thrilled to embark on an exciting journey to shape the future of our beloved parks and recreation facilities. As the heartbeat of our community, these spaces are essential for fostering health, happiness, and a vibrant sense of community. With the previous plan updated in 2018, it's time to set our sights on the next chapter and create a vision that will carry us forward for the next five years.

Our goal for the Parks and Recreation Plan is simple: to continue to enhance the parks and recreation system into a world-class experience for all. We aim to create spaces that reflect the diverse needs and desires of our community, promoting wellness, connection, and an appreciation for nature.

Why is this plan important? Because we believe that parks and recreation play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for residents of all ages. Whether you're a child exploring the wonders of nature, a young adult seeking an active lifestyle, a family enjoying picnics in the park, or a senior finding solace in a peaceful green space, our parks are here to serve and uplift everyone.

Through this master plan, we will focus on several key areas:

Development and Enhancement: We will identify opportunities to expand and improve our current park system, ensuring that every neighborhood has access to high-quality green spaces and recreational facilities. This includes revitalizing existing parks and developing innovative amenities that cater to the diverse interests of our community.

Accessibility and Inclusivity: We are committed to making our parks and recreation facilities accessible and inclusive for all residents, regardless of physical abilities or backgrounds. We will prioritize the implementation of universal design principles, ensuring that everyone can participate in and enjoy the benefits of our parks.

Environmental Stewardship: We recognize the importance of preserving and protecting our natural resources. Our master plan will emphasize sustainable practices, such as energy-efficient infrastructure, native plantings, and wildlife conservation efforts, to create a harmonious relationship between our parks and the environment.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The input and ideas of our community members is the foundation of this plan. We are seeking your feedback through our online surveys, park “field days,” and public meetings.
