Poppleton Park Playground Improvements
Consultation has concluded
Poppleton Park Playground features playground equipment dating back to the late 1990s, is one of the City's oldest playgrounds, and is scheduled for replacement. Poppleton Park is located east of Woodward Ave, bordering Woodward, North of Maple. The current amenities for ages 2-12 include 2 playstructures, swings, slides, and a sandbox.
Poppleton Park is a 17.2-acre Community Park slated for playground improvements this fiscal year (July 1, 2025-June 30, 2026). Thanks to the passing of the Parks and Recreation Bond of November 2020, citywide playground improvements are the City’s next priority. Poppleton is at the top of the list for a new playground, shortly following W. Lincoln Well Park and Pumphouse Park. Inclusive playgrounds are called for in the updated 2024-2028 Parks and Recreation Master Plan, with Poppleton planned for a fully inclusive, accessible playground.
The focus of the project is the area where the playground currently resides within the park. The City’s playground designer, Penchura, has prepared a draft concept for this plan, pictured below, which will be introduced at the August 5, 2025 Parks and Recreation Board meeting.
The concept for the Poppleton playground has a strong emphasis on inclusivity, utilizing elements for the wheelchair user, as well as a fully accessible main tower structure all the way to its highest point. Other features include accessible swings and seesaws. The concept also includes a solid safety surface for enhanced accessibility for all ages and abilities. Shade elements, more seating, and more trees are also part of this concept.
In addition to gathering feedback on this draft concept at the Parks and Recreation Board meeting in August, the City has prepared the survey below for those unable to attend the meeting. Please take the survey and let us know what you think!
Feedback from the August Parks and Recreation Board meeting and this survey will be incorporated into a final draft design presented at the September 9, 2025 Parks and Recreation Board meeting for recommendation to the City Commission for final approval of the project likely in October.
