Consultation has concluded
The Birmingham Plan is the City’s primary opportunity to comprehensively evaluate its present condition and recent past, and decide how to shape its future. Birmingham has a history of citywide master plans dating back to 1929. Citywide plans are designed to coordinate area-specific plans (e.g. Rail District) and topic-based plans (e.g. Multi-Modal Transportation Plan), and provide an opportunity to re-evaluate recommendations.
The 2040 Master Plan process began in the spring of 2019 with in-person public engagement opportunities such as the round table discussions and charrettes. The first draft of the 2040 Master Plan was developed using ideas from the public completed in the fall of 2019. Residents have offered their ideas and feedback on the first draft of the plan during virtual Planning Board meetings, via email, and submittals. October 2019 - The first draft of the complete Master Plan was developed based on progress results of public engagement and ongoing planning and analysis with Birmingham's elected and appointed boards and commissions. Read the first draft here.

February 2020 - March 2021 - The 1st draft of the 2040 Master Plan was presented to the Planning Board topic by topic. Residents were encouraged to participate and offer their ideas during these meetings. Topical presentations can be viewed here.

Spring 2021 - The consultant team is preparing a second draft of the Master Plan integrating feedback from residents, the Planning Board, and the City Commission.

Summer 2021 - The second draft of the Master Plan will be discussed at Planning Board meetings and at a joint meeting of the City Commission and Planning Board. The community is encouraged to share ideas and comments on the second draft.

The consultant team will prepare the third draft of the Master Plan which integrates feedback and commentary from residents, the Planning Board, and the City Commission.
